Our practice is the oldest continuously operating veterinary facility in the Pittsburgh area having been founded by the late Dr. Werntz in 1919. The present owner, Dr. David Burghard, has been attending to the needs of his clients and their pets in this practice since 1971.

The hospital is accessible to the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh being located in the community of Penn Hills. Originally founded as a large and small animal practice, the emphasis has changed to small animal as the area has become more metropolitan. However, it's original pastoral feeling has been maintained as it is located on several treed acres overlooking the intersection of Verona and Mt. Carmel Roads.

Dr. Burghard is a graduate of Michigan State University where he earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He is also a veteran of the Armed Services having served as a Captain in the U. S. Army Veterinary Corps during the Vietnam conflict.

He has been happily married since 1969 to his wife, MaryAnn. She is a 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and shares in the administrative duties of the hospital.

Their Labrador Retriever, Reba, who was in charge of quality control and inventory receipt (provided dog treats are dispensed), passed away in July of 2004. She was a special friend and is greatly missed. On October 2nd, 2004 a 7 week old female black Labrador puppy was obtained by us. Her name is Jazz and she has developed into a more than adequate replacement for Reba.

Our practice philosopy centers on providing personal service to each individual client and pet. We strive to meet their needs and exceed their expectations. Since we have many third generation clients, we feel that we have been successful in accomplishing this goal.
